Fun Family Vacation for Kids

If you are looking for a fun family vacation for kids, look no further than San Antonio, Texas.

On a trip to San Antonio in summer, 2011, our family was looking for fun things to do with the kids.

We were also looking for those great family vacations hidden gems to enjoy (and pass on to visitors of this travel website!)

Kiddieland was a place that someone mentioned.

Quickly doing a bit of research, I pulled up some not so favorable reviews on the computer. It was described as old, scary, although something the kids like.

I also found a reference that said the park was under new ownership, had been restored, and was now a popular San Antonio birthday party venue.

I was interested because I thought our kids might enjoy it, but also wanted to get the real scoop to know if this was a travel spot to recommend on this travel website.

Of course I had to check it out.

We were so glad we did!

What a charming spot!

Kiddieland is located near the San Antonio zoo and the Japanese Tea Gardens. It is a small park, shaded by old trees.

Kiddieland was created in 1925 and has an old carousel that was built in 1918. The history of the carousel is posted where you can read about it when you visit the park.

There are several rides, the kids that appeal to little kids, mostly the variety that go around in a circle over and over.

Rides included the carousel, little boats, airplanes, pony carts, and helicopters to ride in. There is also a small ferris wheel along with a few other similar rides.

The rides were freshly painted, and although they were older rides with a few cosmetic flaws, our kids had a great time and thought they were perfect.

I took lots of photos so you can see for yourself...

On our visit, Kiddieland was clean and tidy

We visited on a Tuesday morning in the summertime, and the park was not crowded (although I understand on the weekends it is). Rides were cheap – you could buy tickets for each ride, or buy a wristband that gave unlimited rides.

There is a snack shop that serves food, drinks and snow cones!

There is an arcade with the stationary rides, along with a few old-fashioned video games.

We also found clean, new restrooms - with air conditioning!

This is what we consider a true hidden gem for family vacations – it was fun, memorable and a cheap vacation destination!

Now there is another family vacation Texas travel destination nearby, that is free as well

Japanese Tea Gardens

Just around the corner are the Japanese Tea Gardens.

When I was a little girl I came to San Antonio with my Camp Fire Girl troop and we visited the Japanese Tea Gardens. I had never seen anything like it and I was spellbound.

Naturally, I wanted to take my own daughters there as well. They loved it too, and wished that they could come back again.

Our visit didn’t take long, but it was a nice oasis and break from the hustle and bustle.

By the way, the sign at the entrance says “Chinese Tea Gardens”. Evidently after Pearl Harbor, the name at the entrance was changed from “Japanese” to “Chinese”, but all other signs we saw that are there today say “Japanese”.

It is free to visit the gardens, and you’ll get some great photo opportunities. Enjoy!
